Chinatown’s Stigma and Support By: Nathalie Espinoza

English:

Chinatown residents have been undergoing anti-Asian and prejudice ever since the start of COVID-19. Ignorant people have blamed Asians, no matter their ethnicity, for the cause of the virus. There have been attacks, racist comments, hate speech, and slander, more than ever before. But one of the most prevalent effects of this pandemic is that many restaurants that were once packed, like the Phoenix restaurant at 2131 S. Archer Ave., have been deserted. The manager, Fai Liang, fears that their business will have to close, even after they have been a Chinatown staple for about 30 years. They’re afraid that the few customers that trickle in are not going to be enough to keep them afloat. And just like them, many other restaurants are afraid of losing their businesses. This made longtime residents Carlos Matias and Jose Corcoles spring into action. They organized a meeting to show all of these struggling businesses support, making sure the voices of these people were heard. And they hope to spread the message that there’s nothing to be afraid of and that these businesses and families are struggling, and they need everyone’s and anyone’s help. They want to show Chinatown is open for business, and that everyone should come out and have good food. Hopefully, everyone will start to listen and will come together to lend a helping hand or two.
