The Alliance Français de Chicago (“Alliance”) is a non-profit organization located at Dearborn Street and Chicago Avenue that provides Chicago with a French cultural and learning center to develop the relationship between the American and French-speaking people. The organization is funded by the French government as well as through grants and private donors.
The Alliance has a variety of multicultural events open to the public as well as an expansive library and CD collection. For example, they host weekly French yoga and a monthly book club. Each year they have a festival celebrating all the Francophile countries.
One of the Alliance’s cornerstone programs is the Education Outreach Program administered in conjunction with the Chicago Public Schools. This program strives to help students in underprivileged settings who study French in school to learn more in-depth about French history, grammar, and speaking skills. About 50 high school students come to the Alliance weekly from schools such as Kenwood Academy, Lake View High School, Lane Tech, Schurz High School, Von Steuben, Westinghouse. At the CPS high schools, students who are selected by their French teachers come from far and near, in all kinds of weather, to attend the weekly program at the Alliance. They show tremendous commitment, coming to the Alliance from far away after a full day at school. Along with other students who are more advanced in French from the Latin School of Chicago, the Lycee Français de Chicago, and Payton College Prep, I meet with the Alliance students every other week to help them in the program. There are two different classes for a range of levels taught by two native French-speaking teachers. They begin each session with a “gouter,” snack in French. Their snacks usually consist of a variety of French delicacies meant to be a fun opportunity to learn vocabulary, get some grammar basics and learn about the culture in the many countries that have French speakers. The volunteer assistant teachers, like me, help the students with games to improve their French and independently tutor the students who would benefit from the one-on-one oral practice. It has been a blast to meet new people like me who enjoy languages and show them aspects of French culture they did not know before. According to the director of the Education Outreach Program, the purpose of the program is to facilitate an environment that “makes the students feel comfortable and happy so they can fall in love with the French language.”
The program is a two-year program, and once they have completed the program, the Alliance gives the CPS students the opportunity to have a French immersion experience. A few students are selected to go to Paris for the summer with the Alliance teachers as chaperones to explore the City and use their French. Other students are provided with a scholarship to attend a French immersion camp in Minnesota. For many of the students, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn about another culture and explore the world outside of Chicago. I enjoy the opportunity to use French to talk about Francophile countries and, best of all, meet other high school students from all across Chicago.
Like I said at the beginning of the article anyone with a membership can access Alliance’s library, CD collection, and all the other programs. You can also sign up for a weekly email advertising what is happening at the Alliance and experience all sorts of activities ranging from movies, lectures/discussions, book clubs, cooking classes, and exhibitions. L’Alliance française de Chicago est une organisation à but non lucratif située à l’angle de la rue Dearborn et de l’avenue Chicago qui apporte à Chicago un centre culturel et éducatif français pour développer la relation entre les Américains et les pays francophones. L’organisation est financée par le gouvernement français et aussi par des donateurs privés.
L’Alliance a une variété d’évènements multiculturels qui sont ouverts au public. Ils ont aussi une grande librairie et une collection de CD. Par exemple, ils hôtent du yoga français et aussi un club de lecture chaque mois. Chaque année, ils ont un festival qui fête tous les pays francophones.
Un des programmes les plus importants à l’Alliance est “l’Education Outreach Program” administré en partenariat avec Chicago Public School (CPS). Ce programme essaie d’aider des étudiants sous privilégiés qui étudient le français à enrichir leurs connaissances françaises de l’histoire, de la grammaire et de leurs compétences orales. Environ 50 étudiants viennent à l’Alliance chaque semaine des lycées Kenwood Academy, Lake View High School, Lane Tech, Schurz High School, Von Steuben, Westinghouse. Les étudiants de CPS qui sont sélectionnés par leur professeur viennent de loin et de près, dans toutes les conditions pour participer au programme. Ils montrent beaucoup d’engagements quand ils viennent de loin pour faire encore des études après une longue journée à l’école.
Avec d’autres étudiants plus avancés en français, du Lycée français de Chicago, et Payton College prep, je me rencontre avec des étudiants chaque semaine pour les aider au programme. Il y a deux niveaux différents pour les étudiants, les deux niveaux sont enseignés par deux professeurs nées en France. Les étudiants commencent le programme avec un goûter. Le goûter consiste d’une variété de gourmandise française avec l’intention d’être une opportunité amusante d’ apprendre du nouveau vocabulaire, de la grammaire, et sur la culture des différents pays francophones. Les assistants-volontaires, comme moi, aident les étudiants avec des jeux qui les aident avec leur français et aussi donnent des cours particuliers aux étudiants qui ont besoin d’aide individuelle. C’est un moment formidable pour rencontrer de nouvelles personnes qui, comme moi, adorent les langues et les aspects de la culture française avec lesquelles ils n’avaient connectés avant.. D’après le directeur du programme, l’objectif du programme est de faciliter un environnement qui “rend les étudiants à l’aise et heureux afin qu’ils puissent tomber amoureux de la langue française”.
Le programme dure deux années. Après que les étudiants ont fini le programme, l’Alliance leur donne l’opportunité d’avoir une expérience d’immersion française. Quelques étudiants sont sélectionnés pour aller à Paris chaque année avec les professeurs pour explorer la ville et utiliser leur français. Les autres étudiants ont une bourse mise à leur dispositionpour aller à un camp d’immersion au Minnesota. Pour beaucoup d’étudiants, les voyages sont des expériences une fois dans une vie pour explorer une autre culture et le monde en dehors de Chicago. J’apprécie l’opportunité d’utiliser mon français pour parler des pays francophones et de faire connaissance avec d’autres étudiants de tous les coins de Chicago.
Comme je l’ai déjà dit, n’importe qui avec une adhésion peut avoir accès à la bibliothèque et la collection de CD, et tous les autres programmes. Tu peux aussi t’inscrire pour les e-mails chaque semaine qui te disent ce qui se passe à l’Alliance, par exemple, des films en français, des lectures/discussions, des cours de cuisine, et beaucoup d’autres choses!
