The pandemic has hit most industries hard, but none more than the tourism industry. The tourism industry, including restaurants, hotels, museums, and so much more, were forced to shutter their windows at various times throughout the 14 months. This has hurt owners of these businesses as well as governments and their economies that depend on the tourism industry. Most countries in Latin America depend on the tourism industry for their economy. The tourism rate in Latin America was growing at a rate of ten percent every year. The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that the pandemic cost Latin America’s tourism industry $230 billion in losses in 2020. The tourism industry provides jobs, infrastructure, sales, and these all lead to money and economic stimulus. As the world seems to be heading in the right direction in terms of the pandemic, many Latin American countries are beginning to find ways to attract tourists back. This past Spring Break many people traveled to Mexico in the Carribean. But how are these countries safely letting people back in and can it be safe? To ease potential travelers’ minds, countries have advertised their COVID mitigation protocols. Although all countries have adopted different approaches most have these minimal requirements: a negative test required for entry or a quarantine and proof of health insurance. We will have to wait to see after the “Spring Break surge” whether these mitigation protocols were effective. Countries like Brazil, have looked for other approaches. Brazil’s over 50,000 businesses in the tourism sector (restaurants, lodgings, cultural sites) had closed. However, Brazilian entrepreneurs have tried to compensate for the lack of tourism by encouraging domestic travel. There have been signs of recovery. Data from the National Tourism Confederation (CNC) shows that sales in the domestic tourism industry (restaurants and lodging) surged for the first time since the shutdowns. Showing signs of a recovering world! Let’s hope that we will all be visiting in Latin America soon!

La pandemia ha afectado a casi todas las industrias, pero a ninguna más que a la del turismo. La industria del turismo incluye restaurantes, hoteles y museos. Muchos de estos establecimientos han sido obligados a cerrar durante la pandemia. Esto ha afectado mucho a los dueños de los establecimientos, también al gobierno y las economías que dependen del turismo. Muchos países en América Latina dependen del turismo para mantener sus economías. Antes de la pandemia, el sector de turismo en América Latina estaba creciendo 10 por ciento cada año. El World Travel and Tourism Council estima que América Latina ha perdido $230 mil millones en 2020 en el sector de turismo. La industria del turismo proporciona trabajos, infraestructura, y ventas que deja dinero en la comunidad local y estimula la economía. Como el mundo parece ir en una buena dirección en términos de la pandemia, muchos países en América Latina están abriéndose a turistas de otros países. Esto empezó durante las vacaciones de primavera cuando muchas personas fueron a México y al Caribe. Pero, ¿cómo están permitiendo que la gente vuelva a entrar de forma segura? Para tranquilizar a los viajeros potenciales, los países están publicando sus políticas de mitigación del COVID. Todos los países han adoptado reglas diferentes, pero casi todos tienen uno de estos requisitos: un examen de COVID negativo o hacer cuarentena y demostrar que el viajero tiene aseguranza médica. Todavía queda ver si estos protocolos de mitigación serán efectivos, después de las vacaciones de primavera, cuando hay un aumento de viajes. Los países como Brasil han buscado otras soluciones. En Brasil más de 50,000 negocios en el sector de turismo cerraron. Los empresarios brasileños han intentado compensar la falta de viajes, fomentando el turismo doméstico. Han habido señales de recuperación.
